Drake’s Baking Legacy
Drake’s baked snacks are more than just those packed goodies you see at supermarkets because they have a long legacy of baking. I know supermarket store snacks don’t really ring a bell in terms of legacy compared to pastries made in bake shops, but believe it or not, Drake’s got one. It all started with the bakery foreman of Vanderveer & Holmes Biscuit Company named Newman Drake.
After he mastered the needed skills of baking, Drake became confident enough to open his own business called N.E. Drake Baking Company located at 135th Street in Harlem, New York City. He sold different kinds of pound cakes, which soon became a local favorite.
Many years passed, Drake further expanded the company while creating some of Drake’s classic favorites, such as Devil Dogs, Yankee Doodles, and Funny Bones.
By 1981, they held a Name That Duck contest among consumers along with a prize of $5,000 scholarship to the winner. That was the year that Drake’s iconic duck mascot, Webster, was born. In 2021, Webster got a new look along with Drake’s new pastry packaging as how you see them on the shelves today.
Drake’s Classic Cakes
Now that you’ve learned about Drake’s baking legacy let’s check out some of their classic baked goodies throughout the years.
Devil Dogs – 1926
Devil Dogs are definitely the OG Drake’s classic, as they have been around since 1926. You can’t call yourself a true Drake’s fan if you haven’t tried these treats. It features a devil food cake layer of vanilla-flavored cream between two cakes. They’re perfect to pair with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee.

Yankee Doodles – 1928
Drake’s has been baking these Yankee Doodles treats since 1928! They’re the same devil food cake base with a vanilla cream filling. The difference? They’re in the form of cupcakes! They’re perfect to snack on or serve at your child’s next birthday party.

Funny Bones – 1961
In a different turn of events, Drake’s is now upgrading from their usual vanilla cream center! In 1961, Drake’s introduced the Funny Bones snack, which features their usual Devil food cake with a peanut butter cream filling. It’s a classic at Drake’s and it has been spreading the laughter up to this day.

Ring Dings – 1968
Ring Dings is one of Drake’s classic staple pastries, as they have been New York favorites since Drake’s first released them in 1968. They’re like miniature devil food cakes with round shapes loaded with chocolate. It has a vanilla-flavored creme center that is sandwiched between two chocolate cakes.

From The Club
I like a good, moist, bite-sized cupcake as a snack, so I’m sure that I’ll be loving Drake’s Mini Cake Bites! I actually prefer classic ones, but as a (beginner) coffee drinker, I wouldn’t mind having the coffee-flavored ones. 😅 It’s also a sin to not try Drake’s classic devil food cake flavor, so I’ll definitely add that to my cart. Okay, I guess I’ll get them all so I can have something to munch on as I work. You could never have too many snacks in your pantry, right?
