Takis, which originated in Mexico, have swept the world by storm since 1999. What makes Takis more unique than other tortilla chip snacks? For one, the tortilla chips are rolled into a tube shape, giving them the ultimate crunch factor. Another unique thing Takis has going for them is their unique blend of spices, which are known to give a “volcanic explosion” in every bite. Now, you can make your own magic with our Homemade Takis recipe.

One perk of making Takis at home is that you can customize the flavor profile to fit your preferences. Be sure to check out our customization options, but don’t be afraid to get creative. This recipe is simple to make and comes together within 30 minutes. Now that’s what I’m “Taki-n” about! Pun intended.

The Takis History

ingredients to make homemade takis recipe spicy

What’s Takis’ backstory? Find out with these fun facts.

  • Takis was invented in Mexico but expanded to America in 2004.
  • The inventors of Takis thought they’d be most popular with a Hispanic demographic, which was quickly proven wrong. It seems everyone wants to live la vida loca!
  • Takis produces more than just rolled tortilla chips. They also have a line of peanuts and potato chips.
  • No matter what your flavor preference, there’s a Taki for you. This snack comes in all types of flavors like Intense Nacho and Dragon Sweet Chili.
  • Takis aren’t just famous for their flavors, though. There seems to be a taki in every color of the rainbow, including purple and blue!
  • Takis are most popular among Gen Z and Gen Alpha. This may be due to the many TikTok trends surrounding the famous snack.

Cost Benefits of Making Homemade Takis

These days, a bag of Takis will cost about $4.78. In contrast, you can make a double batch of our Homemade Takis for almost the same cost. If you’re feeding hungry kids, you know how valuable that savings is!

Keep in mind that this may vary based on your locale and ingredient availability. Here’s how that breaks down.

  • Masa flour: $0.50
  • Sugar: $0.03
  • Salt: $0.02
  • Vegetable oil: $3.00
  • Powdered cheese: $0.20
  • Chile lime seasoning: $0.30
  • Smoked paprika: $0.20
  • Chili powder: $0.10
  • Onion powder: $0.05
  • Cayenne pepper: $0.05

Grand Total: $4.45

How to Make Homemade Takis

Here’s how to make a batch of deliciously spicy Homemade Takis.

Step One: Create the Rolled Tortilla Dough

masa dough for tortilla chips

Fill a large pot or Dutch oven with oil and heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350℉.

In a medium bowl or stand mixer, combine the masa flour, sugar, salt, and ½ cup water until it comes together in a dough-like consistency. If the dough is too dry, add more water, one tablespoon at a time.

Step Two: Form the Rolled Tortilla Chips

hand rolled takis with masa flour

Using your fingers, roll the dough into ½-inch balls. Place the balls on a piece of plastic wrap, then add another piece on top, sandwiching the dough balls.

Flatten the dough balls, then roll from one end to another, forming a tube shape. Depending on the consistency of your dough, you may have to pinch and seal the tube to keep it from cracking.

Step Three: Fry the Homemade Takis

Add 8-10 Homemade Takis to the hot oil and fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the heat and place on a paper-towel-lined plate.

Step Four: Make the Seasoning

While the Homemade Takis fry, mix the powdered cheddar, chile lime seasoning, smoked paprika, chili powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl.

While the Homemade Takis are still warm, sprinkle some of the seasoning mix over the top. Enjoy!

What to Serve With Homemade Takis

Homemade Takis are great on their own, but they can also be a fun alternative to regular tortilla chips. Serve them alongside your favorite burrito or taco, or load them up with nacho toppings for a movie night snack no one will forget.

You can also serve them with a dip such as guacamole, sour cream, salsa, or ranch dressing.

Customization Options

You can customize your Takis to fit a variety of preferences. For example, amp up or lower the cayenne pepper to adjust the “heat rating,” as Takis would say. You can also eliminate any hot spices for a nacho cheese flavor.

Pro Tip: If you can’t find powdered cheese, use Cheddar-flavored popcorn seasoning. It works just the same!

Storing Leftover Homemade Takis

Leftover homemade takies can be stored in an airtight Ziploc bag or container for 3-4 weeks. However, they can grow stale like any other snack, so proper storage is a must!

Notes

NOTES: *To achieve a neon-red appearance, you can purchase Red Dye 40 Powder on Amazon. A little goes a long way; you shouldn’t need more than a pinch or two. You can also experiment with the the red liquid, but to behonest, it’s just for looks.  My version tastes the exact same without the extra chemicals.
