- Creamy Tomato Pesto – Is it spaghetti or pesto? Kidding aside, this sauce is made for spaghetti lovers who like their dish tomato-infused. It’s made out of sun-ripened tomatoes and balsamic vinegar mix for that sour good taste. To make the sauce creamy, cheesy notes from Grana Padano and Pecorino Romano cheeses are added.
- Sweet and Spicy Pepper Pesto – Do you like your pasta sweet or spicy? Get the best of both worlds in this pesto jar. It combines freshly Italian grated cheeses with red and chili peppers. That’s one sweet and spicy way to make a pesto!
- Vegan Pesto – Now, if you don’t want cheese on your pesto, then this option is perfect for you since it’s got everything but cheese. They’re made of 100% Italian basil that is made thick and creamy to enjoy the pesto base even without cheese.
Matt Michaels, Pesto Brand Manager at Barilla, said that the brand’s expansion is meeting their customer’s appetite for a growing genuine Italian flavor. Michaels added that with the Mediterranean flavor profiles of the sauces will not only inspire new creations but will be a staple across kitchens in the country.
Now if you’re down for pesto dinner night, then head over to Kroger to grab the sauce of your choice. Each is priced at $3.99, which makes a great value! They will be rolling out nationwide at major retailers by 2025 so if there’s no Kroger near you, you might just have to wait for a few months more.

A Family Recipe
Barilla is a household name when it comes to all things pasta. You may have seen its iconic blue box and red-and-white logo, which makes it the most recognizable brand on the shelf. Barilla is actually a family recipe that started out in 1877 as a bread and pasta shop by Pietro Barilla Sr., who already knew the family recipe by heart.
In the 19th century, industrialization came, and Barilla was one of the businesses that got took over. They opened their first factory in 1910, and it actually took 30 years for Barilla shop to start thinking bigger for their business.
It was in the 70s when Barilla started to produce packaged goods of pasta and sauces to reach a far wider customer base and take over the pasta world. All of it was actually Pietro Barilla Jr.’s idea that he had picked up on his trip to America on plans to further expand the family business.
Let’s Talk About Pesto
Since the opening of the first Barilla bakery and pasta shop, the family has been passing down their secret of quality Italian food such as pesto. You can use Barilla’s pasta for a wide range of dishes such as pasta, pizza, sandwiches, vegetables, and many more. Aside from the new pesto sauces that are released at Kroger, Barilla boasts two of their original pesto base:

- Rustic Basil – If you want a good old pesto dish, then the Rustic Basil is the perfect pesto jar for you. It’s made of fragrant Italian basil and freshly grated Italian cheese — the original ingredients in a simple pesto dish.
- Creamy Genovese – If you want a much more creamier pesto, then grab this Creamy Genovese sauce. It’s made with the same ingredients as Rustic Basil, fragrant Italian basil, but even more freshly grated Italian cheese of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

I love a good pesto dish; it’s one of my favorite pasta dishes! Barilla is a pesto sauce that I’ve never tasted before, but from its rich history, I bet that family secret recipe is waiting for me to try it. When it comes to pesto, I want it extra creamy with a little hint of sweet and spicy, so I guess the Sweet and Spicy Pepper Pesto might be my next grocery target.
